Pickwick Learning Teaching School Alliance School Improvement Group (SIG) Leader

29 March 2018

Pickwick Learning Teaching School Alliance are looking to recruit three Learning School Improvement Group (SIG) Leaders.

The School Improvement Group (SIG) Leader is an exciting new role for an innovative leader who is passionate about helping to shape the future of Teaching Schools and believes in the school-led self-improving system.

This is a unique opportunity for a driven, resilient and inspirational leader to help develop and implement Pickwick Learning’s vision to have a positive school improvement impact on all schools in the alliance.

A School Improvement Group (SIG) is a cluster of schools who are part of Pickwick Learning and who come together to form a collaborative partnership with a direct focus on school improvement.

SIGs are organised geographically but schools can choose which group they join. This enables school leaders to choose whether to partner with other schools locally or more geographically distant. Each group is led by a SIG leader who is responsible for co-ordinating the work of the group and chairing SIG meetings.

The SIG is in charge of its own destiny, driving the agenda for the work they do, but will feed into the work of the Teaching School so that Pickwick can help provide bespoke CPD / school support etc. if required and share good practice across the alliance.

Primary Functions of a SIG:
  • Lead the strategic and operational development of a School Improvement Group based in one of three areas: North Wiltshire; Mid-Wiltshire; Bristol/Bath
  • Organise and communicate paperwork for and chair 6 x 3 hr SIG meetings, ensuring commitment and attendance by SIG members
  • identify the needs for school specific CPD and school improvement services and broker them (with the support of Pickwick Learning Teaching School) to help schools address their improvement priorities and improve outcomes for children and develop staff expertise
  • Build capacity and skills in the SIG members to create a portfolio of system leaders (SLEs, LLEs, NLGs) and broker them to undertake school improvement work
  • Organise and lead the Targeted Leadership Programme (FREE for SIG members) targeting the leadership development of emerging and middle leaders in SIG schools (train the trainer training will be provided by Pickwick Learning Teaching School)
  • Develop school leaders understanding of the wider educational landscape of TSAs and MATs
  • Attend Pickwick Learning Hub Leader meetings (Six 2 hour meetings over the course of the year)
